 TS850 MODS

A couple of easy modifications I recently carried out on a Kenwood TS850
are as follows:

1/ Improved receive sensitivity between 500kHz and 1.620MHz.
2/ Adjustable sidetone monitor volume for CW.

1/ The 500kHz to 1.620MHz band has the usual 20dB attenuator fitted. This
can be easily removed to bring the sensitivity of this band into line with
the rest of the receiver's coverage.
Locate the RF UNIT and locate the rx filters under a removable shield.
Remove the screws holding the rf unit to the chassis and carefully lift
the unit up so it can be turned over. It may be necessary to unplug some
of the leads to the board. On the right side (under the filters) locate
R7 and R8 (150 ohm) and R9 (33 ohm). Remove these resistors and replace
the 33 ohm resistor with one of the 150 ohm ones. Replace R7 and R8 with
a wire link. Restore the unit and the mod is completed.

2/ For some reason the cw sidetone level is not adjustable from the front
panel. This mod uses the monitor control to adjust the level.
Locate the IF UNIT and at the rear is the preset sidetone level control.
It is not necessary to remove the board for this mod.
Near it is R239 (330k ohm). Cut the printed track between R239 and R223
(4k7 ohm) at the R239 end. Solder a wire link between the end of R239
(that used to connect to R 223) and pin 2 of IC7 (monitor amplifier).
Adjust the cw sidetone preset for maximum volume. The level may now be
controlled by the front panel monitor control. The monitor switch will
not switch the cw sidetone off but will work as usual otherwise.

!!!! To Come back at normal position (Beep), Push Button POWER off and then
Push Simultaneouselly buttons POWER and VOICE !!!!

                                 ________________

All These functions were not mentioned in the INSTRUCTION MANUAL.
I think this could be very interresting for Blind people, and would avoid
the cost of the Voice Synthesiser (Of course only for functions above).

(See also Part 2 for more).

Best 73s to all.
